Rare Martian Pink Diamond Sold for Whopping $17.4 Milllion at Hong Kong Auction
Pink Martian, the largest pink diamond ever put to tender, was sold for an amount that exceeded twice the estimate, Christie’s representatives announced that put this gem on sale on Tuesday in Hong Kong.This 12.04 carat diamond, a pure and intense pink, belonged jeweler Harry Winston, which sold in 1976 an anonymous collector.The Martian Pink gem was named in 1976, the same year the United States successfully launched two space probes to Mars, the first ever sent by humanity to this planet.
In the same auction in Hong Kong, a Burmese ruby set a new record price, being sold for 551,000 dollars per carat.The most famous pink diamond in the world belongs to Queen Elizabeth II. Williamson Pink Diamond was offered the British king during his marriage in 1947. With a round 23.6 carat, gem was later carved into a brooch.
