Incredible Christ of the Abyss Statue On The Italian Riviera
The amazing Christ of the Abyss statue can be found at a depth of about 49 feet at the bottom of the bay of San Fruttuoso inside Portofino’s Protected Natural Marine Area. The statue depicts Jesus Christ as he offers a benediction with his hands and head raised towards the sky, and it has been sitting below the waves ever since August 22, 1954.
The incredible sculpture was created by an artist named Guido Galletti honoring an Italian scuba diving pioneer named Dario Gonzatti, who died in 1947 during a dive at the exact spot where the statue can be found today. The Christ of the Abyss is about 8.2 feet tall, and it was made using melted bronze from medals, ship parts and bells. This caused the statue to become a victim of corrosion, which is why it had to be brought to the surface and restored in 2003.
Even though this stunning landmark sits at a shallow depth and can be admired closely with little difficulty, a replica has been placed on the surface within the church of San Fruttuoso. There is also another copy of the statue in Florida, Key Largo as well as in Lake Palü, Val Malenco. The original cast is currently stored and put on display at the National Museum of Underwater Activities in Ravenna, Italy.
