Giorgio Armani – The Man and the Brand
Giorgio Armani is a famous fashion designer who was born on July 11, 1934 in Piacenza, Italy. Armani was fascinated by the human body from an early age, and so he attended two years of medical study at the University of Piacenza. However, the soon-to-be designer was forced to take a break from school in order to complete his mandatory military service. While he was temporarily relieved of his military obligations, Armani had the opportunity to work at a department store, where he assisted a photographer with the designing of decorations.
With his military service complete, Giorgio Armani dropped out of college and focused on a full time job at a famed department store named La Rinascente. This cleared a path for him towards the fashion business, as he later joined his friend Sergio Galeotti and decided to found Giorgio Armani S.p.A. in July 1975. Even though he enjoyed great success in Europe thanks to his original and outstanding clothing lines, Armani did not make a clear impression on America until 1980, when Richard Gere agreed to wear some of his clothes as he starred in American Gigolo. Soon after, many Hollywood stars were seen wearing Armani ensembles, including Jodie Foster, John Travolta and Michelle Pfeiffer. Since his products were in such high demand, the talented designer was able to expand his fashion empire, even though his partner and friend Sergio Galeotti died in 1985 because of AIDS. Since then, Giorgio Armani took over the entire management of his large fashion house, and proved to the entire world that he is not only a very capable designer but also a distinguished businessman.
Today, Giorgio Armani S.p.A. includes a plethora of sub-labels such as Emporio Armani, Giorgio Armani, Armani Collezioni, Armani Junior and more. Armani’s fashion empire comprises thousands of stores worldwide as well as a series of hotels, one of which was opened in Dubai in 2010. Armani’s assets combined are worth dollars in the billions, which is why his company is widely considered one of the most successful and iconic in the fashion industry.
