Ashford Castle – Ireland’s Best Luxury Resort
This majestic building and the surrounding property are located in County Mayo, Ireland, overlooking Lough Corrib. We are talking about a 365-acre estate known as Ashford Castle, the very same historic site where the movie The Quiet Man starring John Wayne was shot. Now the castle is (back) on the real estate market, priced at €25 million (over $32 million).
The price is excellent, considering that in 2008, Gerry Barrett bough the property for a whopping €50 million. The castle currently works as a lavish hotel, and it is reportedly running on profit, but the owner placed it into receivership. The hotel is currently run by Tifco Hotel Group, owed by an Irish individual.
The castle has a long history, having been owned by many important families, such as the Guinness family in the 1850s. Celebrity guests here included Great Britain’s King George V, Oscar Wilde, President Ronald Reagan, John Lennon, and Pierce Brosnan (aka James Bond), who celebrated his wedding at the resort back in 2001.
Ashford Castle was named best resort in Ireland, and the third best in Europe by Condé Nast Traveller. With 83 luxurious rooms and suites, the hotel is one of the most expensive in the country (between €400 and €950 per night), but you can be sure that ever penny is totally worth it.
